Do you think her bacon may have been leaner? The color difference and the mention you make of the remaining fat in the finished product makes me wonder if different bacons might produce different end results. Perhaps the peppered bacon might be interesting.
Hmm...I hadn't mentioned it, but I did put in about a Tablespoon of peppercorns. The color difference might be my daughter's crappy camera. It would be interesting to try a different kind of bacon - I used Nueske's, a good brand with less fat, but thicker slices and not a distinct smoked flavor.
Next time I'll make some kind of whiskey or bourbon...yum. And maybe more seasonally appropriate. I'll save the tomato water for summer.
I like soup. I love bacon, but that's about the only meat I'll eat. I love my job -- I work at a fabulous art gallery in the Twin Cities. I have two offspring, both of whom are delightful, but rarely at the same time. I'm almost always cold. Sharpies, Peeps and Tab are just about the best things in the world, but not in combination.
